Suspected fraudsters arrested |
||
#StopThinkFraud | Over the last few weeks you will have seen a number of warnings from us about the increase in courier fraud in areas across the county, but warning the community is only part of our efforts.
Officers from our Serious Fraud Investigation Unit (SFIU) have been working hard to intervene and prevent further cases and as a result have today (Wednesday) arrested two people caught in the very act.
In a phone call a person – very convincingly claiming to be a police officer - tricked a victim into taking out thousands of pounds in cash before sending round a 'courier' to pick up the money.
Realising they had been scammed, the victim bravely rang the alarm, and our SFIU officers have been on the case ever since. So, when the perpetrators tried to repeat the trick this morning, our officers were patiently waiting for them with open arms (well, open cuffs would be more accurate).
The pair are currently in custody being questioned.
It doesn't end there, this week our officers have been visiting jewellers and taxi companies in Bedfordshire giving advice as to how they can identify vulnerable customers and prevent this sort of activity.
Remember... STOP – Consider whether the transaction is unusual for the customer THINK – Politely challenging the customer highlighting concerns FRAUD – Ask if the customer has been ask to meet someone soon and call 999 if they have If you have elderly or vulnerable relatives please warn them.
